European Travel: Overlooked Items You Shouldn’t Forget

pack

Packing for your European vacation might seem like an easy thing to do. All you really need are the basics, such as clothing, footwear, and your travel documents, right? Wrong. Travel to a foreign country requires a few extra items, without which you could find yourself shelling out money on unexpected expenses. Be sure to pack these overlooked items for your European vacation.

 European Adapter for Your Devices

If you plan on taking your cell phone, tablet, or other electronic device, you will not be able to charge them unless you have the proper adapter. As you well know, U.S. plugs typically have two rectangular-like prongs, with one side being slightly larger. There are also three prong plugs, like the one your laptop uses.

Outlets in Europe are very different than the ones we use here in America. Their plugs are also be two or three prong, however the plugs are cylindrical. Therefore, your American charger will not plug into a European outlet.

You will need to buy an adapter that plugs into your device on one end (to accommodate the American plug), and that will plug into the European outlet on the other side. Be sure that your current power cord accepts both 110 volts (American) and 240 volts (European). If it does not, you will need to buy a power cord that accepts both.

Toiletries

Unlike American hotels, most European hotels do not offer toiletries as an amenity. This means that you will need to pack your own razors, shampoo and conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, etc. Although bar soap is typically provided, your bathroom will not have any washcloths. You will have to bring your own washcloth, sponge, etc.

A Small First Aid Kit

When you travel, you can suffer from any number of injuries or ailments, and relief can be hard to find if you are not familiar with the shops in your destination city. To be fully prepared for motion sickness, headaches, blisters from walking, or even a small cut, you need to travel with your own first aid kit.

Be sure to include items such as headache medicine, medicine for an upset stomach, Dramamine for motion sickness, bandages, antibiotic cream, hydro-cortisone to relieve itchy skin, and bug bite relief.

If you forget these items, you will need to buy them once you arrive. These items can be more expensive in Europe, so do your travel budget a favor and remember to bring them with you.
