As any frequent traveler knows all too well, jet lag can be a real vacation killer. After all, who wants to begin a vacation feeling tired and unable to sleep? Fortunately, there are several things you can do to avoid suffering from jet lag. So, before your next trip, be sure to use these three tips.
Vary Your Sleep Routine
If you have a rigid sleep/wake schedule, you’re more likely to suffer from jet lag. Your body is accustomed to sleeping for a certain amount of hours and waking at a specific time. The best thing you can do to avoid jet lag on your vacation is to vary your sleep schedule.
For example, if your flight leaves at 6 A.M. and you don’t normally wake up until 8, you need to start getting up at 6 a few days before you leave. Doing this will allow your body to adjust to the time change, and will leave you less vulnerable to jet lag.
Skip the Caffeine and Alcohol
Alcohol and caffeine are readily available on almost any flight. However, you’re going to want to forgo these drinks if you’re going to avoid jet lag. Alcohol is a depressant, which can make you very sleepy. Additionally, the effects of alcohol can be intensified while in flight due to the change in altitude.
If you’re taking an evening flight, or landing late in the day, skipping the caffeine is necessary. Drinking caffeine will keep you awake, causing insomnia and leaving you feeling exhausted. Drink water or juice instead. They are a better alternative to alcohol and caffeine and won’t interfere with your natural sleep pattern.
Get Some Fresh Air and Exercise
The best way to stave off jet lag is to get some fresh air and exercise when you land. Fresh air helps to stimulate your body, while exercise gets your blood flowing. Combined, these two can help ward off feeling tired and lethargic.
While you don’t need to hit the gym when you land, a brisk walk will greatly benefit your body and keep jet lag at bay.
