Does a trip to Europe seem fiscally out of reach? It is no secret that a European vacation can be very expensive. However, your European vacation does not have to cost a small fortune. In fact, you can save quite a bit of money on your trip if you follow these helpful tips.
Look for Freebies and Discounts
Nearly every major European city has a tourist bureau or welcome center. These centers are a great resource of information as well as discounts. In addition to finding free local maps, you can also find discounts for local businesses and restaurants, as well as information on free local events.
You should also research any museums or tourist attractions before you plan your trip. Why, you ask? The answer is simple- if you plan correctly, you may be able to visit these places for free. For example, the Louvre offers free admission from October to March on the first Sunday of each month. Entry into the permanent museum collections is also free on Friday nights from 6-9:45 P.M. for anyone under the age of 26.
Some museums in Europe never charge a fee for entry. Museums such as the Modern Art Museum in Paris, the National Gallery, Tate, and the British Museum are all fee free. Be sure to do your research and save yourself as much money as you can by finding these freebies.
Consider Alternative Lodging
When considering your lodgings for your European stay, you need to think outside the box. While a posh hotel might seem inviting, it will also be expensive. If you want to save your hard-earned cash for other things while in Europe, consider booking your stay at one of these alternative places.
- hostel
- University rooms (you do not need to be a student)
- champing (staying or “camping” in a church)
- homestay (staying with a local family)
Many of these options are quite inexpensive, leaving you plenty of money to spend on souvenirs or for traveling around Europe.
Travel During Winter
The absolute best time to take a European vacation is during the winter months. Because you will not be traveling at the height of tourist season, everything will be cheaper. In fact, you may be able to stay at a nice hotel for 40% less than any other time of the year.
Additionally, all of the tourist hotspots will be less crowded. This will make touring popular museums and other tourist destinations much more pleasant. Not only will you wait in line for less time (if at all), but you will be able to truly enjoy these places without feeling crowded or rushed.
